Cong. Lamar Smith: The American People Are Smarter than the Media Thinks

53 support registering immigrants from Muslim-majority countries." By Craig Bannister Americans didnt fall for the medias constant barrage of slanted" stories attacking Pres. Trumps immigration orders the chairman of the House Media Fairness Caucus said recently in a House floor speech. Caucus Chair Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) slammed the media for twisting words facts and poll results to try to turn the public against Trumps efforts to keep America safe.

But it didnt work" because polls show the American people were smart enough to see through the medias spin Rep. Smith said.

The media did everything they could to turn the public against the president. But it didnt work.

The American people are smarter than the media thinks."

Indeed surveys like a recent poll by Rasmussen Reports do show that a majority of Americans favor travel restrictions on countries associated with terrorist activity. On Tuesday Smiths Media Fairness Caucus published its latest newsletter highlighting examples of media bias including two from the Media Research Centers Newsbusters division:
A transcript of Rep. Smiths remarks follows:

For days the media have saturated the news with stories savaging President Trump for his immigration executive orders.

The President wants to protect Americans by temporarily halting the admission of refugees from seven countries considered security threats to the United States.

Despite the medias heavily biased coverage the American people still agree with the president. A USA Today poll found that 53 support registering immigrants from Muslim-majority countries." Only 41 oppose it.

Even the poll was slanted against the president. The question asked implied that all Muslim-majority countries were affected which is not true.

It also used the word register" which has negative connotations and besides is not accurate. A more factual question that inquired about stricter vetting of refugees from the seven countries that pose security risks likely would have garnered even more support for the presidents executive actions.

The media did everything they could to turn the public against the president. But it didnt work.

The American people are smarter than the media thinks."
