This year UNCF will honor Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee with itsExcellence in Education Award for her longtime service to the community and inspiring change through education. Congresswoman Lee has been a supporter of UNCF for many years and has fought hard to make sure that HBCUs receive the necessary funding to continue providing quality education to minority students nationwide" stated Juana Collins Houston Area Director.
The UNCF has opened doors for minorities and paved their path toward higher education for more than 70 years" said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. The funds raised to support historically black colleges and universities have given hundreds of thousands of students the chance to realize their dreams and create a better future for America."
Promising to be a fun-filled night with a purpose this signature fundraising event will provide scholarships to the next generation of leaders. The Gala will include a reception generously hosted by H-E-B and a live performance by The ZAPP Band. Attending the event will be distinguished representatives from the corporate civic and education sectors including UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael L. Lomax. Last years gala raised more than $500000 for scholarships and operational support for UNCF-member institutions in Texas: Huston-Tillotson University Jarvis Christian College Texas College and Wiley College.
