Congressman Henry Cuellar: DHS will extend the limitation of non-essential travel on the U.S.-Mexico border

“DHS is now working closely with Mexico and Canada to identify safe criteria to ease the restrictions in the future and support our border communities.”

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas -- Early this week, Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Secretary Chad Wolf announced that DHS will extend the limitation of non-essential travel at land ports of entry on the U.S.-Mexico border through November 21st.

Though I would have preferred that DHS partially ease the restrictions on non-essential travel on October 21st, I am grateful to see that for the first time, “DHS is now working closely with Mexico and Canada to identify safe criteria to ease the restrictions in the future and support our border communities.” I am hopeful that DHS will continue to engage with us so we can develop a community-backed strategy that focuses on our shared interest in protecting the health of the individual and the health of the border economy.

Throughout the week, I traveled to various parts of the District. I held a press conference discussing the partial reopening of the border, a grant announcement totaling more than $2.3 million in federal funds for Floresville, and an open discussion over the proposed construction site for the ineffective border wall in San Ygnacio. Councilwoman Marissa Ximenez and I visited small businesses throughout downtown Floresville and had great conversations with local public works employees.

My staff in the District continues to attend various events throughout our nine counties.
