Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee a senior member of the House Homeland Security Committee and the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime Terrorism Homeland Security and Investigations released the following statement regarding the decision by Defense Secretary Carter to suspend temporarily collection of overpayments made to 2000 California veterans:
Jackson Lee: Because our nations brave men and women who serve as members of the armed forces have earned and deserve the benefits they have received I applaud the quick action by Secretary Ash Carter in suspending attempts by the Defense Department to collect overpayments of benefits to California veterans years after their service in Afghanistan and Iraqi until a thorough review is conducted and amicable decision reached."
I applaud Secretary Carter for moving quickly to uphold the responsibility of the Department of Defense to make sure that our Veterans are treated fairly and equitably while honoring their service and sacrifice to keep our nation safe.
Secretary Carter has taken steps to ensure fair treatment for thousands of California National Guard soldiers who may have received incentive bonuses and tuition assistance improperly.
Speaker Ryan and Senate Majority Leader McConnell can and must resolve this issue before the end of this Congress."
