Sen. Schumer 2009: It is the judicial record more than speeches and statements more than personal background that most accurately measures how modest a judicial nominee will be.
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Today on the floor U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) noted that more documents will be produced on Judge Brett Kavanaugh than any Supreme Court nominee in history. He went on to emphasize that the nominees judicial record is the best way to determine how they may perform on the Supreme Court a standard set forth during Justice Sotomayors confirmation by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Excerpts of Sen. Cornyns floor remarks are below and video can be found
here.
The White House has turned over more than 195000 documents on Judge Kavanaugh significantly more than were produced for either Justice Kagan or Justice Gorsuch. As Chairman Grassley has pointed out it is the largest cumulative production of executive branch material ever received in the course of evaluating a Supreme Court nominee."
Perhaps our friend the Democratic leader remembers the standard he set with regard to documents during Justice Sotomayors confirmation. He appropriately pointed out it is the judicial record more than speeches and statements more than personal background that most accurately measures how modest a judicial nominee will be."
I agree with the comments made by our friend Senator Schumer that it is the judicial record which tells us the most about how a judge will perform once elevated to the United States Supreme Court."
You heard it the best way to get a sense of how a judge will perform in the future is how he or she has performed on the bench in the past and thats according to our friend Senator Schumer."
The confirmation hearing for Judge Kavanaugh will begin on September the 4th which will be 57 days after President Trumps announcement of the nomination. This is entirely consistent with Justices Sotomayor Kagan and Gorsuch."
I look forward to confirming Judge Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court begins its next term at the beginning of October."
Senator John Cornyn a Republican from Texas is a member of the Senate Finance Intelligence and Judiciary Committees.
