Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas One of the most important things for the cities across Texas is to have a relationship between the city goverment its leadership and the State of Texas leadership.

I met recently with Miss Miriam Cepeda the Governmental Relations Liaison for the City Managers Office from the City of Edinburg Texas who provided me with some interesting information about their visit.

The City of Edinburg visited the State Capitol on March 5-6 2019 to advocate for issues on the citys agenda designed to meet their growing communitys needs.

In a joint effort Cepeda and Edinburgs leaders sought to open the door of communication between Governor Greg Abbott House Speaker Dennis Bonnen State Senator Jane Nelson and other legislators around the state about this regions needs. The focus was on the City of Edinburg the county seat for Hidalgo County and a hub of higher education healthcare economic development and transportation.

The group of city leaders kicked off their series of events and meetings when Mayor Richard Molina Mayor-Pro Tem David Torres and Councilman Jorge Salinas presenting the Key to the City of Edinburg to Governor Abbott.

In addition top-level representatives from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley various healthcare facilities the United States Border Patrol RGV Sector (which are all headquartered in Edinburg) and key Rio Grande Valley legislators were among those at this visit. They made their presence known with an agenda packed full of meetings and events including two resolutions stipulating the City of Edinburg as the Rio Grande Valleys All-America City."

The City of Edinburg is pushing on the following items important to the
Rio Grande Valley Region:

  • Higher Education
  • Healthcare
  • Transportation & Infrastructure
  • Environmental Issues
  • Property Tax Reform

During my discussion with Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina he spoke about the resolution by Rep. Jerry Canales and other legislators who recognize the important border citys contributions to Texas.

Mayor Molina mentioned that Edinburg has received the All AMerican City Award three times and going for the fourth All America City Award. This is about building bridges and building relationships with State Representatives and State Senators.

Molina also mentioned that under his leadership this was the first key to the city given to Gov. Abbott one of the few governors to have consistently visited the City of Edinburg.

Molina introduced the leaders from the City of Edinburg who also joined this special visit.
