Extreme Carelessness Allowed?

Rep. John Ratcliffe Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON  D.C.   Two months ago Americans across the nation were more than surprised when FBI Director James Comey recommended not pressing criminal charges against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for using multiple unauthorized unsecured personal email servers to send and receive classified information and rightfully so. Despite the shocking facts surrounding her case and Director Comeys own admission that Clinton was extremely careless" in her handling of sensitive national security information no charges were pursued. Why? Because of a never-before-seen invisible standard that was added into the criminal code in the consideration of her case. As a former federal terrorism prosecutor I refuse to stand idly by and allow the mishandling of sensitive matters of national security to happen without consequence. And this week I took action to ensure that no one will be allowed to grossly mishandle sensitive information again and get away with it. Thats why I introduced the Classified Information Protection Act which corrects the disconnect between the law as its written and the law as it was interpreted in Clintons case. It clarifies that the law means exactly what it says and that the proof of intent to harm the United States is not required to prosecute those who carelessly and recklessly mishandle Americas most sensitive information. While Clintons saga has brought this issue to light this bill reaches far beyond her individual case. Its about giving the American people confidence that our most sensitive matters of national security will never again be exposed to our adversaries without consequence. We must ensure that anyone not just Hillary Clinton will be held accountable by the law for putting our national security at risk in this way Im proud to be backed by several distinct colleagues who each bring their own respective legal and intelligence expertise to the table in this important fight including Reps. Trey Gowdy Jason Chaffetz Bob Goodlatte and fellow Texan Will Hurd. We plan to keep moving forward in this important mission on behalf of justice and on behalf of the safety of the American people.
