“Scott Turner was confirmed as the 19th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs. As a fellow Texan, he will bring with him the Lone Star spirit of commonsense, accountability and efficiency."
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – The U.S. Senate confirmed Scott Turner, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., released the following statement:
“Today Scott Turner was confirmed as the 19th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs. As a fellow Texan, he will bring with him the Lone Star spirit of commonsense, accountability and efficiency, which have been sorely missing from the federal government.
“For too long, HUD has been run by appointees who were more focused on advocating for pet political projects than agency’s primary missions of improving housing affordability and helping recover and protect communities from disasters.
“I applaud the U.S. Senate’s efforts to secure this nomination, and I look forward to working with President Trump and Secretary Turner to streamline regulatory burdens, improve efficiency, and focus on commonsense solutions for our nation’s housing affordability problems and helping communities recover from disasters.”
Since 2011, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) has distributed more than $8.6 billion in federal disaster recovery funds from HUD in response to hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and other natural disasters. To date, the GLO has helped thousands of Texas communities and families with vital housing recovery assistance:
- More than 9,200 homes rebuilt for Texas families
- Nearly $1.2 billion to construct 137 rental developments to provide 12,581 affordable homes for Texas renters
- 3,907 homeowners reimbursed for more than $126 million for disaster related home repairs
"At the GLO, our mission is to serve the people we are supposed to serve and do it well,” said Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D. " We are proud to be working together with federal, state and local leaders to ensure disaster recovery and mitigation funds are administered efficiently and effectively to benefit Texas communities.”
