Harrison Leads Coalition Demanding Answers
November 21, 2024 – Austin, TX – Representative Brian Harrison and a coalition of current and incoming members of the Texas House of Representatives sent a letter to the University of Texas System (UT System) Board of Regents demanding answers, on behalf of Texas taxpayers, for the System’s unilateral, and possibly unconstitutional, decision to bypass the legislature and provide “free” tuition UT System wide to undergraduate students whose families earn up to $100,000.
Statement from Representative Harrison:
“Nothing is free. This outrageous abuse of power by unelected, executive branch bureaucrats makes higher education in Texas more socialist than California. A decision this consequential should only be made by the legislature. If you liked Biden’s unconstitutional loan forgiveness program, you’ll love this. The legislature must stop this Nancy Pelosi-esque, regressive, welfare-for-the-rich program that abuses working class Texans by forcing them to fund “free” college for “LGBTQ Studies” students. There must be consequences. UT’s budget must be cut, and bureaucrats should be fired.”
Background:
Yesterday, the University of Texas Board of Regents unveiled their plan to provide “free” tuition and fees to children of families that make $100,000 or less a year. This decision appears to have been made without legislative approval or input.
This is more liberal than California. The University of California system only provides free tuition for children of families that make $80,000 a year or less.
Representative Harrison has also recently demanded accountability for leadership at Texas state funded universities, including UT, who continue to abuse tax dollars for liberal indoctrination, such as UT’s “LGBTQ/Sexualities Studies” minor. Representative Harrison has announced legislation to zero out the budget for the Office of the President of any public institution of higher education that does not end these courses and minors.
