This isn’t just about tariffs – It’s about restoring Strength, Fairness & Sovereignty
By Cong. Brian Babin
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, President Trump took action to end decades of lopsided trade policies by signing the Reciprocal Tariff Executive Order – a major step toward restoring economic fairness and American strength. For too long, foreign nations have taken advantage of weak U.S. trade agreements – offshoring our jobs, crippling supply chains, and eroding the backbone of the American middle class. That ends now.
By declaring foreign trade abuses a national emergency, President Trump is putting an end to the exploitation. His executive order imposes new tariffs to reassert U.S. economic independence and defend American jobs:
A 10% baseline tariff took effect April 5th, 2025, on all foreign imports.
- Higher, targeted tariffs will follow on April 9th for countries with the largest trade deficits with the U.S.
- Tariffs will remain until we secure fair, reciprocal trade agreements.
- Essential goods – like pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, energy, and critical minerals – will be exempt.
- Rebuild critical manufacturing in autos, defense, tech, and more
- Shrink our $1.2 trillion trade deficit
- Counter unfair trade practices by China, India, the EU, and others
- Protect U.S. businesses from counterfeit goods and intellectual property theft
Red-Hot Jobs Report
March’s jobs report blew expectations out of the water – adding a strong 228,000 jobs, nearly double the pace of January and February. The private sector is surging, while President Trump continues to dismantle the bloated bureaucracy of the Biden era.
Highlights:
- Private payrolls grew by 209,000 – well above the pre-election average of 124,000.
- Wages are up nearly 4% over the past year as everyday Americans take home bigger paychecks.
- Construction jobs are rising, even amid the President’s tough border crackdown – proving critics wrong about labor shortages.
- Federal government employment dropped by 4,000, while remote work among federal employees has fallen over 16 points.
- We’re getting federal workers back to the office – and back to serving the American people.
House Republicans are united behind President Trump as he delivers a fairer trade system and real results for the American people.
We’re doing the hard work to make America wealthy, secure, and strong once more.
