Lt. Gov. Patrick: Texas Senate Passes Phase-Out of the STAAR Test

"HB 8 is a victory for Texas parents, educators, and most importantly, students.”

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued the following statement today upon the Texas Senate’s passage of House Bill 8, Phasing Out the STAAR test, by Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston:

“Since I was Chair of the Senate Committee on Education 13 years ago, I have been a leader on public education reform. It was then that I began the journey to reduce the burdensome STAAR test. We reduced the number of annual STAAR assessment tests from 15 to 5. I also led on creating a school grading system, so parents would know how well their kids’ schools were educating students. We gave the schools an A through F report card, just like students receive.

“For far too long, Texas students and teachers have been burdened by the STAAR test, a cumbersome one-size-fits-all assessment that fails to actually measure student educational achievement. Yesterday, the Texas Senate passed HB 8 to phase out the STAAR test once and for all, replacing it with a system to assess student growth and improve educational outcomes. HB 8 is a victory for Texas parents, educators, and most importantly, students.”

House Bill 8, by Sen. Paul Bettencourt, phases out the STAAR test in Texas.
