Texas Senate Passes TxDOT Transportation Grant Program for Railroad Separation Project

Senate Passes Senate Resolution 25 – Honoring the Life of Sergio Ivan Rodriguez

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued this statement today following the passage of Senate Bill 1555, TxDOT Grant Program for Railroad Grade Separation Projects by Sen. Robert Nichols, R-Jacksonville, and Senate Concurrent Resolution 25, Honoring the Life of Sergio Ivan Rodriguez, by Sen. Carol Alvarado, D-Houston:

“The death of Sergio Ivan Rodriguez should have never occurred. There should have been a railroad grade separation. No Texan should die at these dangerous crossings, especially near our schools.

"I am proud the Senate unanimously passed SB 1555 today to make sure that dangerous railway crossings can become safer for our students and for all Texans.”

Senate Bill 1555, by Sen. Robert Nichols, requires TxDOT to award grants to political subdivisions for rail-roadway grade separation projects that are located at the intersection of railroads and roadways that are not part of the state highway system (TxDOT already has programs to do this for intersections with state highways). $350 million for these grants will be included in the Senate’s supplemental budget bill.

Senate Concurrent Resolution 25, by Sen. Carol Alvarado, urges the City of Houston to construct the Sergio Ivan Rodriguez Memorial Pedestrian Bridge over the railroad tracks near Milby High School where Sergio was killed. $10 million is included in SB 1 for the City of Houston to build the bridge.
