Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick: Statement on the Unanimous Passage of Senate Bill 27 – Establishing a Teacher Bill of Rights

SB 27 is a result of listening to teachers across Texas with the goal of elevating the teaching profession in our great state.

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued this statement today following the unanimous passage of Senate Bill 27, Establishing a Teacher Bill of Rights, by Sen. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe:

“As the husband of a long-time schoolteacher, the son-in-law of a teacher and the father-in-law of a teacher, I know the impact that a great teacher makes on the development of a child. Texans all remember the teachers who significantly impacted their lives, and rightfully so. SB 27 is a result of listening to teachers across Texas with the goal of elevating the teaching profession in our great state. This bill, in concert with SB 26 (teacher pay increases), will make significant strides to that end. I thank Sen. Creighton for his tireless leadership in improving public education in Texas.”

Senate Bill 27, by Sen. Brandon Creighton, establishes a teacher bill of rights to empower teachers and improve working conditions. If passed into law, teachers would have expanded authority to discipline students, respond to complaints against them, get notified of threats to their campus, and have more flexibility in their contracts.

Additionally, SB 27 includes grants to help paraprofessionals become teachers.
