We have been talking about Border Security for years. Nows the time to deliver
Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. As Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee I am thrilled we will be marking up my
Border Security For America Act this week. This bill will provide the Department of Homeland Security the tools necessary to achieve full operational control and
situational awareness of the border by providing for a wall cutting edge technology and more boots on the ground.
We have been talking about border security for years. Now that we have a partner in the White House who has made this a top priority its time to send a bill to President Trumps desk so we can deliver the American people the security they have long demanded and deserve.

Prayers for Las Vegas
Today we woke up to the heartbreaking news of terrible senseless violence in Las Vegas Nevada. What was supposed to be an fun evening for friends and loved ones at a music festival instead became a nightmare and left at least 59 people dead and 527 wounded.
My thoughts and prayers are with the victims their families and the people of Las Vegas. And we all owe a debt of gratitude for the selfless and heroic actions of local law enforcement officers and first responders whose brave actions saved lives.
Harvey One Month Later
It has been one month since Harvey hit our great state. I joined my colleagues on the House floor to praise the strength and resolve of Texans during these times and to let them know what we are doing in Congress to rebuild and protect Texas from future disasters.
The Texas delegation continues to fight for those who have lost so much in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and are now on the long road to recovery.
The latest action taken by the House in our relief efforts was the passage of
the Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2017. This critical legislation removes financial roadblocks existing under current law provides tax relief for struggling families prioritizes recovery over penalties and incentivizes more people to donate to ongoing relief efforts. Congress must continue to put people before paper to ensure we give Texas families the tools they need to rebuild their lives.

Foreign Affairs Update
The House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the proposed reforms to the State Department and the Agency for International Development. As a senior member on the committee I questioned the Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan on cybersecurity reforms and what the Department is doing to help stabilize fragile states.

Meeting with Director Alles
I had the opportunity to meet with Director Randolph D. Alles of the U.S. Secret Service. The Secret Service has been part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) since it was created in 2002. Director Alles shared with me the challenges the Secret Service is facing and how our work on the Homeland Security Committee can help alleviate some of these concerns. I made clear that their vital mission protecting the life of the President of the United States is a top priority for the committee.
Childhood Cancer Awareness
As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month has come to an end I want us to celebrate our accomplishments thus far and recommit ourselves to the challenges ahead. One of this years milestones was getting the
RACE for Children Act signed into law.
The
RACE Act requires pediatric cancer investigations into adult cancer drugs during their development ultimately leading to safer and effective cancer treatment for our kids. Despite these accomplishments there is still much to be done as cancer remains the leading cause of pediatric deaths. I will continue to work vigorously on other important pieces of legislation like my
STAR Act to ensure that we eradicate this awful disease for our children.
Just a few weeks ago at the Golden Toast we celebrated the achievements of the Childhood Cancer Caucus and also pledged to continue our efforts. You can watch my remarks by clicking

Legislative Update
Last week we passed important legislation including
the Disaster Tax Relief and Airport and Airway Extension Act of 2017 which provides tax credits deductions and other relief to taxpayers in disaster areas affected by Hurricane Harvey.
This week we are voting on a number of bills. Below are a few you may be interested in:
- H.R. 36: Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act which prohibits the abortion of unborn children at 20 weeks after fertilization or later. Exceptions exist for pregnancies resulting from rape incest or to save a pregnant woman whose life is endangered.
- H. Con. Res. 71: Establishing the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2018 and setting forth the appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2019 through 2027. This budget responsibly balances the budget in 10 years strengthens our national defense addresses the culture of unsustainable spending and unlocks pro-growth tax reform.
