Mosquito Repellent Now Covered by Medicaid for Eligible Women in Fight Against Zika Virus

By Rep. Bobby Guerra

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas -- (MCALLEN TX) In efforts to stop the spread of the Zika virus Texas Health and Human Services Commission announced that the Texas Medicaid will now cover the cost of mosquito repellent for women between the ages of 10 and 45. Starting Tuesday August 9th women who are covered in the following programs: Medicaid CHIP CHIP-Perinate Healthy Texas Women and Family Planning will be eligible to receive up to two cans of repellent per month through October 31st. Patients must request a prescription from their doctor. There is no known vaccine or drug that treats the virus. The best protection from the Zika virus is to avoid mosquito bites especially among pregnant women. In order to protect yourself from mosquitoes try following these steps: • Wear insect repellents (EPA-approved) • Remember to cover up with long pants and long-sleeved shirts • Limit your time outside when it is peak mosquito times • Keep mosquitoes outside of your home with air conditioning and window screens • Do not let standing water anywhere near your home Representative Guerra stated I have been working closely with local health officials and agency staff to monitor this situation. As we enter the height of mosquito season it is imperative that everyone is being vigilant especially women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. I am pleased that the agency has taken this step to get women the protection they need. As we move forward I will continue to work with state leaders and keep the public informed with the most up-to-date information.
