U.S. Representative Jeb HensarlingTexas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. The Los Angeles Times recently broke the story that 10500 former National Guardsmen are being ordered to pay back their enlistment bonuses because of an error on the part of the Department of Defense (DOD). These brave men and women who received these bonuses re-enlisted to serve our country during the wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Those who served our nation in good faith should be not be harassed or penalized by their government. Its time for the Pentagon to end their demands for our soldiers to repay their bonuses. Our military members deserve better and should not be held responsible for the DODs mistakes.
The House has taken steps to ensure an injustice like this one does not happen again in the future. In May the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2017 which establishes a statute of limitations on the military recovering future over payments and scrutinizes the Defense Finance and Accounting Services management of existing cases of service member debt. This bill is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law in December. To read the full story click here.
