Congressman John Culberson
Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas This week the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced actions I have long called for which will further protect our borders and maintain the integrity of our nations immigration system. DOJ has created an additional 35 Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) positions along the Southwest border that will further assist in implementing a zero-tolerance policy for illegal entry and will ensure human smugglers are swiftly brought to justice. In addition DOJ has reassigned 18 supervisory immigration judges to adjudicate cases near the southwest border to help ensure that cases are heard swiftly and backlogs are reduced.
These actions are a direct result of increased funding for AUSAs and Immigration Judges which I included in my bill in my capacity as Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce Justice and Science (CJS). My bill provides funding for DOJ to add an additional 100 Immigration Judge teams this year alone as well as legislative language directing these funds to be used for securing the southern border.
Respect for the rule of law is a hallmark of our democracy and I strongly support individuals who want to come to our country legally. As Chairman of the CJS Subcommittee I am extremely invested in ensuring that our federal law enforcement officers have the resources they need to protect every family in America.
I thank Attorney General Jeff Sessions for these actions and look forward to my continued work with DOJ as we answer the call of Americans to prioritize our nations security.
