Providing Property Tax Relief

As a fighter for taxpayers and fiscal restraint, I want you to pay fewer taxes and ensure more of your money stays in your pocket.

Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – Reforming the property tax system has been one of my top priorities since I joined the Texas House.

As a fighter for taxpayers and fiscal restraint, I want you to pay fewer taxes and ensure more of your money stays in your pocket.

That is why I am proud to have co-authored House Bill 3 this past legislative session, which gave the rural school districts in District 2 the ability to earn and keep more money from local property taxes, provided added programs and resources for underserved students, and included over $5 billion in property tax relief to hard-working Texas families!

I was a leader in helping pass Senate Bill 2, which require cities and counties to go to the people for a vote before they can increase their revenue by more than 3.5 percent plus any new local growth. Before Senate Bill 2, every homeowner was at the mercy of their rising appraisals. Now the power is in the taxpayers’ hands.

Additionally, I submitted an amendment to the budget legislation that would have frozen appraisals and will be submitting that same legislation next session. Texans don’t need to pay off their house and rent it from the government.

As you know, property tax values are appraised at the county level, but I've asked the Governor to freeze 2020 property appraisals at 2019 levels using his disaster powers so that local families don’t get hit with an additional economic burden during this global pandemic.

I will continue to advocate for positive change on this issue with the Governor because I know how much high property taxes hurt businesses and families.

I've been working hard to find innovative solutions to reduce our property tax burden while keeping education and other vital services strong, and I will continue to do so.
