RECAP: Rep. Tony Gonzales Hosts Speaker Mike Johnson, House Republicans in Eagle Pass

". . . It may start here in Eagle Pass, but then it quickly reaches San Antonio, and quickly reaches all over the country.”

EAGLE PASS, TEXAS – Today, Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) hosted Speaker Mike Johnson (LA-04) and over 60 members of the House Republican Conference in Eagle Pass, Texas.

“Showing up matters, and I want to thank the Speaker for making this happen. I want to thank the Speaker’s team for being seasoned veterans and putting this all together. I want to thank my own team—this is our 21st border CODEL. I want to thank the members who have all traveled to get here two days after the holidays. We could all be doing different things, but we are united in making sure House Republicans’ top priority is securing this border,” said Congressman Tony Gonzales during today’s press conference. “Two weeks ago, there were 12,000 people coming over illegally. The Firefly facility that we visited earlier today has a max capacity of 1,000 people—there were 6,000 people and there were 4,000 people getting released. When that happens, our communities get turned upside down. It may start here in Eagle Pass, but then it quickly reaches San Antonio, and quickly reaches all over the country.”

“Today, that stopped. Now, it may have to do with the fact that the Speaker and 60-plus members showed up, but it stopped. The biggest part is that 1,400 Border Patrol Agents, today, are not processing migrants that have come into our country illegally. They are out in the field doing their damn job. That’s what I argue we are fighting for the hardest. We want Border Patrol Agents to get back to doing their job. How do we fix this? We end catch and release. How do we fix this? We deport people that are here illegally by the thousands, not the dozens. If you hear from the ranchers, the sheriffs, the judges, the mayors, the people that live here every day–they will tell you the same thing. And the nexus is this—you want to get to the root of the issue? The root is the cartels. The cartels turn it on, and they turn it off. Today is a prime example of that. It is time for us to label Cartels as terrorist organizations,” Congressman Tony Gonzales continued.

Congressman Tony Gonzales delivered remarks to House Republicans, local border sheriffs, and law enforcement officers at a luncheon in Eagle Pass, Texas.
