Cong. Mayra Flores to Speaker Pelosi: Bring 'Social Security Fairness Act' Up for a Vote

“Those who have sacrificed so much in service to our communities, while responsibly saving up for their retirement, should not be punished by Social Security or by Speaker Pelosi,”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Texas Insider Report) — Congresswoman Mayra Flores (TX-34) joined 299 of her colleagues in cosponsoring H.R. 82, the "Social Security Fairness Act of 2021," and is calling on Speaker Pelosi to bring the bill to the House Floor for a vote. The bill aims to repeal provisions that reduce Social Security Benefits for individuals who receive other benefits, including those from earned pensions.

This would also include public service employees who are receiving a retirement pension from a State or Local Governments.

As of 2020, membership in various Texas Pension Systems totaled over 2.8 million, with over 1.4 million active members.

“Those who have sacrificed so much in service to our communities, while responsibly saving up for their retirement, should not be punished by Social Security or by Speaker Pelosi,” said Rep. Flores.

“This overwhelmingly bipartisan bill is what Congress can get accomplished when we work together.”

The Social Security Fairness Act, if enacted, would eliminate both the Windfall Elimination Provision and the Government Pension Offset, two provisions of the Social Security Act that unjustly reduce or eliminate Social Security benefits for millions of Americans who have devoted much of their careers to public service — including police officers, firefighters, federal employees, and educators.

“Given our weak economy under Biden, our seniors and those on fixed incomes are hurting. The time to do this is now,” added Flores.
