Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Today Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) voted in support of the
Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (H.R. 36) which restricts abortions 20 weeks or more after fertilization. Specifically H.R. 36 establishes criminal penalties for any person who performs or attempts an abortion on a fetus after the 20-week mark. In addition this bill provides exceptions to save the life of the mother and in the case of rape or incest. The legislation passed in the House 237-189.
Rep. Smith: Today I voted to protect the sanctity of life and stop the needless suffering of children whom science has showed can feel pain at 20 weeks of gestation. We need to protect vulnerable babies who have heart beats and brainwaves from the violence of abortion.
Earlier this year Congressman Smith cosponsored and the House passed
H.R. 7 the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions Act. This bill prohibits federal funding for abortions and for any insurance plan that includes abortion on demand.
A long-time opponent of federal funding being used for abortions Smith has received recognition from the National Right to Life for his pro-life record and support of the
Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.
