Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – (SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS) – Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) introduced the Curbing Offenses on Policing Services (COPS) Act in the U.S. House of Representatives. The COPS Act increases penalties for individuals who assault first responders and law enforcement officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
“Crime is on the rise in our country. Just last week, five San Antonio police officers were shot at in the line of duty. Our first responders and law enforcement officers work tirelessly to keep us safe, and they risk their lives in the process. Anyone who assaults a police officer or emergency responder should face severe consequences. That’s exactly why I introduced the COPS Act—my legislation increases fines and jail time for bad actors who assault those in the line of duty,” said Congressman Tony Gonzales.
Congressman Gonzales is a member of the Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus and has worked through his position on the House Appropriations Committee to secure millions of dollars in funding to assist first responders and law enforcement officers.
