Rep. Tony Gonzales Presses VA Secretary for Progress on New San Antonio Veterans Hospital

“South Texas is growing rapidly, a new VA hospital in the region is long overdue."

Texas Insider Report: (WASHINGTON, D.C.) – During a House Appropriations Military Construction, Veterans Affairs & Related Agencies Committee hearing on Capitol Hill yesterday, Congressman Tony Gonzales asked Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough for an update on the agency’s plan to construct a new VA Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

“South Texas is growing rapidly, and a new VA Hospital in the region is long overdue. Last year, I helped secure funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs to begin the planning and design process for a new VA facility in San Antonio,” said Congressman Gonzales.

“Secretary McDonough visited Audie Murphy VA Medical Center with me in June, and it was important for me to get him in front of our community and see firsthand our need for new healthcare infrastructure.

"I look forward to working alongside Secretary McDonough to deliver for our veterans, servicemembers, and military families,” said Gonzales.

Congressman Gonzales: “What is being done to construct a new state-of-the-art hospital in San Antonio?”

Secretary McDonough: “You gave us money in FY [Fiscal Year] 24 to do an assessment of what the future footprint in San Antonio should look like. That work is underway being led by the team in San Antonio. When that comes back, then we'll make some decisions about where and how, as against…the other needs in the country and as against…our major construction list.

"But, San Antonio is near the top of our needs.

Congressman Gonzales: “When that feasibility study comes back and shows that…South Texas is only going to grow even more…what is the next step after that feasibility study?”

Secretary McDonough: “The next step will then be to take that feasibility study and make some decisions.”

Congressman Gonzales: “When is the feasibility study supposed to be completed?

Secretary McDonough: “I anticipate…during the course of this fiscal year because it’s this fiscal year’s money. We'll make sure that we're keeping an open line with you on that.”
