Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas – (CLEBURNE, TX) – Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) today applauded the distribution of funds to Texas rural hospitals under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
“Rural hospitals bring lifesaving and essential care to neighborhoods across the 25th District – there is no replacement for the vital role they play in our communities. For far too long, many have operated on slim margins just to keep their doors open, and I am proud to deliver this funding under the CARES Act to help alleviate the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Congressman Williams.
“These funds will give immediate relief to health care providers in need of personal protective equipment (PPE) and supplies to prevent and mitigate the spread of the virus while they work to heal our communities. Rural hospitals in Texas this week received between $2-4 million from the $10 billion allocation in the CARES Act, and those who applied for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) received between $2-3 million. Congressman Williams previously joined lawmakers calling for rural facilities to be eligible for the PPP.

Background:
Congressman Williams supported the CARES Act (H.R. 748), which was signed into law on March 27, 2020. The bill provides relief to health care facilities, taxpayers and small businesses across the country through financial assistance from government grants, low interest loans or tax relief.
Previously, 132 of Texas’ 157 rural hospitals received $84,317 each from the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (limited to hospitals for 49 beds or less), including 7 hospitals in the 25th District.
