By Rep. Jeff LeachTexas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas Representative Jeff Leach filed House Bill 540 honoring the life and legacy of David Sherrard a Richardson Police Officer killed in the line of duty. Specifically the proposed bill authorizes portions of U.S. Highway 75 to be designated as the Officer David Sherrard Memorial Highway along the corridor within the City of Richardson - just south of the President George Bush Turnpike (State Highway 190) and north of the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway (Interstate 635).
I am proud to file this important legislation honoring Richardson Police Officer David Sherrard a true public servant who was tragically killed in the line of duty in House District 67 stated Representative Leach. My hope is that this memorial will bring a sense of joy to his family and honor and pride to his fellow officers who continue to serve us faithfully and courageously every day.
Officer David Sherrard faithfully served as an Officer for the Richardson Police Department for 13 years where he served on the SWAT Team for a decade. His life ended tragically on February 7 2018 in the line of duty while responding to a disturbance call within the City of Richardson. Officer Sherrard is survived by his wife Nicole Sherrard and daughters Emily and Grace Sherrard all of Murphy Texas; sister Cristal Goings of Mesquite Texas; brother Mark Sherrard of Mesquite Texas; and parents Alvin and Margaret Sherrard of Dallas Texas.
The renaming of U.S. 75 to the Officer David Sherrard Memorial Highway is an honor that is justly deserved for our hero stated Nicole Sherrard. While his absence from our lives will never be forgotten by our family and friends this designation guarantees that for generations people will remember Dave and the sacrifice he made for our community.
Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey issued the following statement: We are profoundly grateful to Representative Jeff Leach for this legislation that will honor Officer David Sherrard. This Police Department and the citizens of Richardson will always be grateful for the sacrifice made by Officer Sherrard and his family. The naming of U.S. Highway 75 through the Richardson corridor will be an enduring gesture that will forever honor his service to this community."
The 140-day Legislative Session will commence at the Texas Capitol on Tuesday January 8 2019.
