Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) Chairman of the House Committee on Rules released the following statement applauding the passage of a message to allow for the federal prosecution of those who knowingly cause or attempt to cause significant harm to any law enforcement officer:
When police officers put on their uniform every morning they never know what the day has in store but one thing is for certain - they are always willing to put their life on the line to protect our communities. It is heartbreaking to see that police deaths in the line of duty have risen 250 marking the highest number in a decade. In 2016 alone 64 police officers were killed including five heroes from my home city of Dallas. Just last month we lost another officer in Dallas to a criminal thug who deliberately shot him while he was just trying to do his job. It is unconscionable for anyone to attack these brave heroes who selflessly put their lives on the line to ensure our families are safe.
Any violence towards our men and women in blue is absolutely reprehensible and should be met with the harshest punishments. I wholeheartedly support this measure to hold anyone who harms an officer accountable and deter future violence towards our police officers.
