CONG. McCAUL: Standing with our Military & Veterans

Discussing the Iran Conflict with Ambassador Waltz

By Cong. Michael McCaul

Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON, D.C. – Last week, I proudly voted for the annual National Defense Authorization Act. Fully funding our military is a fundamental duty of Congress — one that has never been more vital as America’s adversaries seek to undermine global stability.

This year's NDAA passed the House with several provisions I championed that will support our brave servicemembers and their families, equip our warfighters with the tools they need to win, and deter our adversaries’ aggression around the world.

I am especially proud of a provision I led with Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas) to expand access to neuroplastogen treatments like ibogaine for our nation's veterans. Our servicemembers and special operators risk everything to defend our freedoms, and far too many return home with deep wounds — both seen and unseen.

Mounting evidence suggests that, where traditional medicine has failed, ibogaine can offer a durable path to recovery for these heroes. Our nation's veterans answered the call for us, and I'm proud to help deliver for them. Since 1979, a dark veil of terror has reigned over the Middle East. The Iranian regime is responsible for the deaths of thousands of U.S. servicemembers all over the region in Iraq, Lebanon, and the Gulf. In addition, it has plotted to kill the president of the United States and members of his cabinet.

That's why I commend President Trump for being the first president to confront Iran on its path to a nuclear bomb. A reckoning with this regime was unavoidable. Our military was meeting its objective. Then, we paused for negotiations.

While I appreciate the administration’s efforts to give peace a chance, I have never been sanguine about this regime. At last week's House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, I spoke with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz about how we must unleash the power of the U.S. military to bring an end to this conflict and ensure Iran can no longer wreak havoc around the globe.
