Tax Reform for Christmas

By U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady Texas Insider Report: WASHINGTON D.C. Over 30 years have passed since the last overhaul of our nations tax system. In that time our tax code has become one of the most complicated unfair and uncompetitive in the world. After years of work dozens of hearings hundreds of meetings with stakeholders and much debate Congress will take the final step in delivering transformational tax reform legislation that charts a new course for our country. We will reaffirm for all of the families and Main Street businesses struggling to get by that relief is on the wayrelief from a broken tax code from a slow-growing economy from stagnant wages and from jobs fleeing overseas. I was proud to lead this effort for the American people but it would not have been possible without Members of the House the Senate and the White House who were committed to challenging the status quo and powerful Washington special interest to seek pro-growth solutions and to improve lives. Starting in 2018 individuals and families across our country will be able to keep more of their hard-earned money and companies of all sizes will be more competitiveboth here and around the world. I appreciate the hard work of my colleagues and look forward to sending this historic legislation to President Trumps desk before Christmas. *** President Trump recently signed another important piece of legislation this year: the National Defense Authorization Act or NDAA. This bill is a big step towards rebuilding our military reforming the Pentagon and supporting our troops all to ensure that we can keep America safe and secure. However there is more work to be donethe House of Representatives has passed crucial legislation appropriating funds for our military but some in the Senate continue to put up road blocks. This is the same kind of tactic that has eroded our military capabilitiesand our troops deserve better. *** As we gather with family and friends this holiday season I ask that you remember our neighbors who were impacted by devastating storms and wildfires this year. Locally we felt the tremendous impact of Hurricane Harvey which was an unprecedented storm that affected over 1 million people thousands of homes and small businesses and hundreds of square miles of property. Congress has not forgotten and we will continue to work with state and local leaders to provide the resources our communities and small businesses need to recover and rebuild. *** One of the most uplifting Christmas events in our district every year is Wreaths Over Willis. Its been my honor to join the Willis American Legion Post 618 Auxiliary year after year to place handmade Christmas wreaths on our heroes graves to remember their sacrifice and to pray for them and their families. The commitment of our local veterans and their families to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice is truly moving and beautiful. This year I paused at the gravesite of Johnnie Carl Lawson a Sam Houston State University student who lost his life in Vietnam half a century ago to remember him along with the hundreds of Willis veterans remembered each year at Christmas. Please join me this Christmas in saying a prayer for these warriors and all those in uniform serving us around the globe. Merry Christmas from the Brady Family to yours.
