Texas Middle & High Schools Showcase Young Scientists at 2018 Texas Science & Engineering Fair

For a downloadable photo gallery of all winners please visit: http://bit.ly/2018TSEF Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN Texas (SAN ANTONIO)More than 1200 bright young Texans vied for prizes last weekend at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair a competition that brings together top science fair winners from across the state. The event was hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center March 24-March 25. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) has co-sponsored the competition for 17 consecutive years with ExxonMobil. Shelly Goel from School of Science And Engineering At Yvonne A. Ew in Dallas was named Best in Show in the senior division. Tanaz Muhamed from Otto Middle School in Plano received the top junior division honor.
The Texas Science and Engineering Fair showcased the wonderful creativity of students across the state as they competed in 22 different categories" said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. I congratulate all of the regional and statewide winners whose continued work in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) fields will lead to innovative solutions for real world issues facing Texas. Thank you to all the volunteers around the state who worked to make this years event a success."
Students competed in two divisionsjunior (grades six through eight) and senior (grades nine through 12)in one of 22 categories. In addition to Grand Award winners in each division and Best of Show awards were presented to first- through third-place honorees in each category. The fair offered students the opportunity to earn their way to national and international science fairs. Many of the junior division students learned that they will have the opportunity to compete at a Broadcom MASTERS (Math Applied Science Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars) national science fair. Select senior division winners secured a chance to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May.
By establishing a solid foundation in STEM while in school the participants of the Texas Science and Engineering Fair will help build the future of Texas economic development" said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. We are committed to providing a setting like this in which outstanding students can showcase their work."
First and second place winners from the science fairs senior division were awarded a scholarship to attend the Texas Governors Science and Technology Champions Academy a weeklong residential summer camp also sponsored by TWC which will be held this summer at Southern Methodist University.
This event brings out the best and the brightest students from all technical backgrounds" said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Julian Alvarez. We hope this competition will inspire a new generation of leaders to continue their studies on the science and engineering fields."
