We Need a Real Response to the Immigration Caravan Heading North

By Erick Erickson The President needs to plan a military response to this caravan but also a Homeland Security response.

First lets abrogate some of the fear. There is a caravan of 1500 people heading north through Mexico who want to seek asylum in the United States. Should any of them be permitted into the country they will be finger printed and they will not be eligible for DACA. The people eligible for DACA have had to be here for several years already. To say they will be able to apply for DACA is reckless fear mongering.

This caravan has happened several times over the past few years by a group called People Without Borders. They have not successfully penetrated the border. It is for show.

That said they are sending signals they intend to raise the stakes with Donald Trump as President. Several media outlets have suggested they intend to try to overwhelm border entry points.

John Davidson has a good read on the border situation and as he notes there is already a steady and largely unreported wave of illegal immigration into the country. The media stories of deportations and declines on entry misreport what is actually happening.

This caravan will potentially try to overwhelm entry and many of those who make the journey will attempt illegal entry. The duty of our Department of Defense is to defend the United States. I think the President should prepare a military plan of action to prevent an incursion into the United States by those traveling in this caravan. He should also plan out a Homeland Security response with increased border patrols as the caravan approaches.

Instead of mean tweets and tirades the United States needs a plan of action and the President should absolutely use this issue in the 2018 campaign. Democrats are failing to secure the border.
