Just 37% Say U.S. is Headed in Right Direction, with 88% "concerned about" the economy
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Texas Insider Report) — After considerable slippage on the calendar, President Biden is expected to formally launch his re-election campaign this week – with a video, on Tuesday, we think.
Polls and dozens of recent media interviews of Democrat voters from all parts of the country show that most of Joe Biden's own party does not want him to be their nominee, but the lack of enthusiasm is tempered by another widespread motivator working in Biden’s favor: The determination to prevent another Donald Trump term as president.
- 44% of Democrat Voters Would Like Biden to Step Aside for 2024, Just 25% Want Him to Run: Monmouth Poll
- The Monmouth University Poll is respected as a high-quality survey with a distinct bias toward Democrats
Further, the latest Rasmussen Reports National Survey finds that nearly a third of American voters would consider voting for a 3rd-party candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election – and Democrats are more open to the idea than either Republicans or independents.
The latest Rasmussen Reports National Telephone & Online Survey finds that 31% of "Likely U.S. Voters" say it is at least "somewhat likely" they will vote for a 3rd-party candidate in the 2024 presidential election, including:
- 12% who say it’s Very Likely in 2024
- 59% are not likely to vote 3rd-party,
- including 32% who say it’s Not At All Likely
- Another 10% aren’t sure

Of the 44% of Democrats who would like Biden to step aside so someone else can run as the Democrat nominee, according to the Monmouth University Poll of self-identified Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters, these voters do not have a clear idea of who they would like to see step in as the party’s nominee in Biden’s stead:
- 51% of the Democrat electorate cannot offer a name who they would like to see as the party’s nominee if Biden does not run.
- Among those who do have a preferred alternative, Vice President Kamala Harris is the only potential contender registering above single digits, with 13%.
Three in four Democrats – or 74% – have a favorable opinion of Joe Biden, and just 14% hold an unfavorable view. However, when asked what they want to see happen in 2024 if the choice was up to them, only 1-in-4 want him to run for a second term.
Just 25% say their preference is for Biden to pursue a second term, while 30% say they have no preference either way.
- Among voters who identify as "strong" Democrats – representing just over half of the party’s electorate – 36% want Biden to run again, and 36% would prefer him to step aside.
Just 37% of Likely Voters Say U.S. is Heading in Right Direction
According to a new Rasmussen Reports Survey for the week ending April 20th, only 37% of "Likely U.S. Voters" think the country is heading in the right direction, 2023.
Concerns about the U.S. economy remain high, which is something that will grate on President Joe Biden's yet-to-be announced re-election effort this week.
The latest Rasmussen Reports National Telephone & Online Survey finds that:
- 88% of Likely U.S. Voters are "concerned about" the economy
- including 60% who are "Very Concerned"
- Only 11% are not concerned about the economy
These findings are nearly unchanged since last October. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
